NOV TDS-8SA top drive
What it does
The TDS-8SA is a 750-ton AC top drive for larger land rigs and offshore derricks. One 1,150 horsepower motor produces 62,250 ft-lb of continuous torque. The pipe handler is a PH-100, a step up from the PH-75 on a TDS-11.
Which rig it fits
Hang it in a derrick built for 750 tons. Published weight is 38,000 pounds and working height is 24 feet, so it needs more room and more hook-load rating than a TDS-11SA. Elevator links go to 750 tons. A 500-ton link set under this drive does not make the installation 750 tons. Washpipe packing is offered at 5,000 or 7,500 psi. Know which one is on the unit.
How to tell it apart
NOV’s brochure prints these same ratings under the label TDS-8S. The current product table calls it the TDS-8SA. Treat them as the same 750-ton, 1,150 horsepower rating and confirm the serial number. A TDS-4S is also 750 tons, but it is a DC drive with less torque. A TDX-1000 is the next hoisting step, at 1,000 tons.
What to check before you buy
Confirm the mast, the links, and the traveling block are 750-ton equipment. Then confirm the motor is the single 1,150 horsepower AC motor and the pipe handler is a PH-100. An IBOP at 15,000 psi is published for this model. The washpipe rating is the line that varies.
Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. Top Drives is where that kind of equipment is listed.
