Cameron Type U ram BOP
What it does
A ram preventer closes from both sides of the wellbore. Pipe rams seal around the pipe that is in the hole. Blind rams close on open hole. Shear rams cut the pipe. The Type U is Cameron’s widely used surface ram body. Well pressure helps hold the rams closed, which is why a loss of hydraulic pressure does not, by itself, unload the seal.
Which rig it fits
It fits land and surface offshore stacks, in the bore and pressure the well program requires. A 13⅝-inch 10,000 psi double is a common land drilling stack. A 7 1/16-inch 5,000 psi body is a different preventer that happens to share the Type U name. SLB lists 7 1/16, 11, and 13⅝ inch bores from 3,000 to 15,000 psi, and larger bores at the pressures published for each size. Bodies come as single, double, triple, or quad.
How to tell it apart
The Type U II is a later body. Bonnets and ram part numbers do not swap with a U just because both say Cameron. The TL is the lighter land ram, and its parts are different again. An annular, such as a DL or a T-90, sits above the rams and closes on a range of pipe sizes. It does not replace a ram cavity.
What to check before you buy
A listing that says only “Cameron U” is incomplete. Get the bore, the working pressure, and whether the body is a single or a double. Then get the rams that are actually installed: pipe size, blind, or shear. Ask about NACE trim if the well is sour, and about the side outlets. The closing unit has to have enough usable fluid for the cavities on this body, not for a different size.
Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. BOPs & Well Control is where that kind of equipment is listed.
