NOV ST-80C² iron roughneck

NOV / Varco · Listed under Pipe Handling & Rig Floor Tools

What it does

The ST-80C² is the current pedestal iron roughneck in the ST-80 class. It spins the pipe, then torques the connection. NOV rates makeup at 60,000 ft-lb and breakout at 80,000 ft-lb. Spin speed is about 75 rpm on 5-inch drill pipe, at only 1,750 ft-lb. The spinner gets the threads together. The wrench makes the torque.

Which rig it fits

It fits a drill floor with a socket, hydraulic power of at least 28 gallons per minute at 2,100 psi, and tool joints from 4¼ to 8½ inches. Connection height is 23 to 59 inches and horizontal travel is 60 inches. The assembly weighs 7,800 pounds. If the pipe you run is outside that OD range, or the well center is farther than 60 inches from the socket, this is the wrong roughneck.

How to tell it apart

An older ST-80 is the previous machine in the same breakout class. An ST-100 makes up to 100,000 ft-lb and breaks out to 120,000. The C² is still a 30-degree wrench on a pedestal. It is not the track-mounted high-torque machine. Controls on the flyer are local manual, with a torque dial.

What to check before you buy

Confirm the rig HPU can supply the flow and pressure, and that the socket location matches the 60-inch travel. Look at the dies and the spinner motor. Slew is ±90 degrees. A unit that will not slew onto well center does not matter how much torque the wrench is rated for.

Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. Pipe Handling & Rig Floor Tools is where that kind of equipment is listed.
