NOV MPT-270 iron roughneck

NOV · Listed under Pipe Handling & Rig Floor Tools

What it does

The MPT-270 is a track-mounted iron roughneck for high-torque connections, including casing. NOV lists 200,000 ft-lb for both makeup and breakout, and prints that torque as 270,000 N·m. The model number follows the newton-meter figure. It is not a 270,000 ft-lb machine.

Which rig it fits

It fits a rig whose floor has a track and whose connections need about 200,000 ft-lb. Tool joints are 3½ to 10 inches, with a 2⅞-inch kit optional. The brochure lists a weight of 14,990 pounds and hydraulics of at least 111 gallons per minute at 3,000 psi. Travel depends on the track that was built with the rig. A pedestal ST-80 floor does not accept this machine.

How to tell it apart

An AR/ST-160 stops at 160,000 ft-lb breakout and can be a pedestal or a track. The MPT-270 is track-mounted and casing-ready, with a 60-degree wrench. Spin is about 100 rpm on 5-inch drill pipe at 3,467 ft-lb. Controls can be a wireless remote or the driller’s console.

What to check before you buy

Confirm the track, the hydraulic supply, and that 200,000 ft-lb is actually what the pipe needs. Ask which options are on the unit: mud bucket, casing module, and the control console are listed as additions, not as part of every machine. A roughneck without its track is a wrench with nowhere to go.

Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. Pipe Handling & Rig Floor Tools is where that kind of equipment is listed.
