NOV AR/ST-160 iron roughneck
What it does
The AR/ST-160 makes and breaks connections that an ST-100 will not torque. NOV publishes 140,000 ft-lb makeup and 160,000 ft-lb breakout. The wrench angle is 60 degrees, and this torque class is described as casing-ready. Tool joints run from 3⅞ to 10 inches.
Which rig it fits
Buy it for a floor that runs high-torque connections or casing, not for ordinary drill pipe an ST-80 already handles. It is offered on a track and as a pedestal with a floor socket. Those are different floors. A track machine needs the track steel. A pedestal machine needs the socket. Horizontal travel on the track version is much longer than a pedestal ST-80’s 60 inches.
How to tell it apart
The ST-100 is 100,000 ft-lb makeup and pedestal-only in the current table. The MPT-270 is the track machine above this one, and its 270 is newton-meters: 200,000 ft-lb, not 270,000 ft-lb. Spin torque on this high-torque class is still only a few thousand ft-lb. The wrench does the work the spinner cannot.
What to check before you buy
Match the mount to the floor before you match the torque to the pipe. Ask if the casing package is actually on the unit. A “casing-ready” rating in the brochure is not the same as a casing kit in the crate.
Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. Pipe Handling & Rig Floor Tools is where that kind of equipment is listed.
