NOV MGS-1000 multi-grip slip
What it does
Power slips sit in the rotary and hold the drill string when the elevators are open. A multi-grip slip holds more than one pipe diameter without a full slip change, using inserts or a grip range instead of a single-size slip body. The MGS-1000 is NOV’s slip under that name.
Which rig it fits
It fits the rotary or master bushing it was built for, and the pipe range of its inserts. A public load table for this exact model was not in the onshore section that covers the PS-series slips, so this page does not turn the “1000” into tons. The PS-21, for comparison, publishes load, rotary fit, and operating pressure as separate lines. Ask for those same three on an MGS-1000.
How to tell it apart
A BX elevator hangs on the links and lifts the string. The slip holds the string in the rotary while the elevator is open. A single-size slip body only fits one pipe OD. The point of a multi-grip slip is that the inserts cover a range. The rotary bowl still has to match. A slip for a 37½-inch table will not drop into a 27½-inch table.
What to check before you buy
Get the API 7K load rating, the rotary it fits, and the insert range. Look at the inserts. A slip rated for the load, with inserts that do not cover the pipe on the rack, will not hold that string.
Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. Pipe Handling & Rig Floor Tools is where that kind of equipment is listed.
