Kato 1,265 kW generator
What it does
A rig generator takes the diesel’s rotation and makes the AC power the houses and the drilling motors use. Kato Engineering builds a lot of those generators. A figure such as 1,265 kW is an output. It is not a catalog model. The same kilowatts can be built at more than one voltage, frequency, and power factor.
Which rig it fits
It fits the engine and the switchgear it was built with. A 60 Hz land-rig generator is often 1,200 rpm behind a 3512-class engine. Voltage has to match the VFD house or the SCR house. A 1,265 kW machine at the wrong voltage will not tie onto the bus, even if the kilowatts look right.
How to tell it apart
The 3512C is the engine. This is the generator on the other end of the coupling. Frame size, bearing arrangement, and the AVR are what make two Kato machines of similar kilowatts interchangeable or not. Single-bearing and two-bearing generators do not bolt up the same way.
What to check before you buy
Read kilowatts, kilovolt-amperes, voltage, frequency, power factor, rpm, insulation class, and temperature rise. Ask if the engine, radiator, and skid are included. A bare generator still has to be aligned to a prime mover before it makes power.
Sellers list what they have, so this exact model is not always up. Power Generation is where that kind of equipment is listed.
